Roots and Recipes Videoconference with Maine: Planning

Group 3: Shaneika, Korie, Rebekah, Maddie, Jordie, and Kevin

1) 10 questions
General Hawaii questions:
Has anyone ever been in Hawaii?
What do you want to know about Hawaii?

Hawaiian History and Culture Questions:
Do you know any history about Hawaii?
Have you ever heard of pidgin language?

Food Questions:
Wanna know what halo halo is?
Eaten coconut? Mango?

Activity Questions:
Canoe paddling?
Do you know what an ukulele is?

Maine Questions:
What is it like in Maine?
What do you guys eat there?

2) By culture: We all agreed that we should show a powerpoint for each different culture we present. We maybe end with a Hawaiian dish and show an example of the dish. Also we should focus on explaining how diverse Hawaii is and maybe go around and share our ethnicities. At that point we could teach them some of the vocabulary and or some pidgin.

3) Powerpoints
Filipino: Halo Halo by Rebekah
Hawaiian: Poi by Kiana
Mexican: Mexican Wedding Cookies by Jarrett
Japanese: Andagi by Angela
Chinese: Gao by Korie
Italian: Spaghetti by Shaneika
Laotian: Kaopuhn by Maddie
American: Bananas Foster by Jordie

4) Activity
Do a demo on making some kind of popular food in Hawaii but something simple.

5) Presentation Plans
-We can contact people in Maine who we are presenting to and do an instructional demo on the food. Also, we thought that they and us could be making the food at the same time. So, we would have to contact them in advance.
-Maddie and Shaneika will be the hosts of the presentation.
- Prepare the foods on our background table and introduce each of them.
- In the beginning of our presentation, we can do an introduction on Hawaii and end our introduction by saying," ...and what brings all these cultures all together is....FOOD!" By then, we would show them the food in the background.
- Then, we can speak in pidgin while presenting. This way it would be funnier.
- We can be interactive with them and have them try to pronounce the foods for us. This way it would be more FUN!! :)
- We were also thinking that maybe those who created the power points would be the ones to present it to Maine.
- We also thought that maybe we could do our demo on spam musubi and bring the ingredients to class, so we can make it.
- We also planned on making a simple video showing people enjoying the dishes that we have chosen to represent the cultures.
