Enclosed From the Celebration

'Twas the very night of New Year's Day. I sat in my living room couch and awaited the approach of January 1, 2010. I was anxious, but not as much as I thought I would be. Outside the comfort of my home, children popped firecrackers and shrieked as it sparked. Sadly, I could not take any part in this for I do not celebrate any holidays. I did nothing special for this day. All night, I listened to the noise, similar to a bomb, that shocked me several times. Each time, our appliances and furniture shook rapidly. The stink bomb polluted the air and covered the sky with a gray and smoky substance. It was hard to see what was in the distance. I glanced at the time twice. Finally, the final hour had arrived. I grabbed my camera and captured the last of what was known as 2009. Within minutes, the hour hand stroke. The celebration that took place outside had increased. It was a memorable day and if I wanted to, I would be able to recapture this seemingly small memory through my camera. The fireworks faded away as we proceeded further into 2010. The people that I like to call 'celebrators,' popped the last of them. They hesitantly made their way into their homes. A gush of wind slowly cleared the smoked sky. The 'sound of celebration' subsided, until all has been calmed and quieted. It seemed as though 2009 passed by within a blink of an eye. All those good memories that would be remembered of in the future has gone. I was saddened, but glad at the same time. I told myself that I can now experience newer things this new year. I can't wait for what 2010 has stored for me. :)

  1. Hi Shaneika,
You have an interesting perspective on New Years, since you could not join in the celebration. I think that uncommon perspective can make for a very creative approach. Your details about your appliances and furniture shaking are examples that would support this approach. It would be good to have more.
As far as word choice, take a look at two words: "hesitantly" and "gush." I think "gush of wind" should be "gust of wind." "Gush" is more appropriately used to describe the flow of liquids, where "gust" describes air movement. The word "hesitantly" may not be the best description for your neighbors. If they were afraid of entering their homes, they may be "hesitant" but if they did not want to go home because they were having such fun, the better word would be "reluctantly."
