Outside Reading Card

Self-assessment in comment below.

  1. I believe that I deserve a 4 for this Outside Reading Card because I was able to include all of the required components into my graphic. I was also able to present my understanding of Catcher in the Rye. In the conflict, I explained the struggles that Holden goes through and the difficulties he tries to run away from. In the resolution, I explained how he was able to deal with the problem, with the help of his sister. The reason why I chose that significant quote in my graphic is that I wanted a quote that relate to both the conflict and resolution. The quote that I used shows how Holden viewed life before he stepped out of his comfort zone. He wanted life to be as silent, frozen, and quiet as a museum. Nothing would change and that was the most simplest idea of life that he wished he could live. There would be no problems and every day would pass by, just the same. This shows Holden's wanting to escape from reality. He steps into his own little fantasy world as he daydreams about such a simple life. This is how it relates to the conflict of the novel.

In the graphic, I wanted to show my interpretation of the book. The boy inside the clam represents Holden Caulfield in his own little comfort zone/fantasy world. His nonverbal expression shows that as long as he stays in there, he will experience loneliness, depression, and anxiety as he alienates himself from reality. I placed him in the center because I wanted that to be the center of focus when the viewer sees my graphic. The two hands reaching out for each other in the background shows the resolution. In the end, his sister Phoebe gave him a helping hand which caused him to step out of that shell he locked himself in.

I used photoshop techniques such as the adjustment of the opacity of the pictures, drop shadows, hue/saturation, emboss, and strokes to give life to my graphic. I didn't want it to look so 2-d, so I used these to make it POP. I wanted to give it some animation and I used these techniques to emphasize the different parts of my graphic.
